Firefighter Membership

There are two types of firefighters: Attack Firefighters and Support firefighters. The process of becoming either type of firefighter is essentially the same.

A Firefighter applicant will need to fulfill the application requirements by the Central Lyon County Fire District. Firefighter applicants will need to attend 40 hours of introductory level training to become eligible for membership. To become a Firefighter this training must include at least 32 hours of firefighting training with no more than 8 hours of medical training counting toward the 40 hours.

An applicant may become eligible to run calls after the first 24 hours of training. All time spent working emergencies will be counted toward training hours.

Upon completion of the 40 hours of training and the minimum time requirement, the firefighter applicant will become eligible for membership. The applicant may then be approved as a member by majority vote. Upon this approval, the applicant becomes a Firefighter and official member of the SCVFD organization.

Attack Firefighter

An attack firefighter is a full level firefighter. Firefighters wear Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and are capable of making entry in live fire conditions for direct fire fighting combat.

An attack firefighter must meet specific OSHA mandated requirements such as an annual physical, annual fit test, and regular training with SCBA. There are different certification levels that an attack firefighter can achieve. These are Entry Level Firefighter (ELFF), State certified Firefighter I, and State certified Firefighter II.

Support Firefighter

A support firefighter is not a full level firefighter, but they support firefighting efforts at actual fire emergencies. The support firefighter can do many of the skills that attack firefighters can but are restricted when it comes to working within the toxic fire environments, or within what is called the “hot” zone of firefighting.

The support firefighter does not wear Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and typically does not take part in direct firefighting combat. The support firefighter still has to meet certain OSHA requirements, but not as many as attack firefighters.

Support firefighters provide critical services such as engine pumper or water tender operations, lighting and other auxiliary equipment, filling of SCBA’s and firefighter accountability just to name a few. Additionally, support firefighters can be fully functional firefighters in the arenas of wildland firefighting, or crash rescue (vehicle extrication), or even EMS.

Support members only need to receive one certification for firefighting called an Entry Level Support Firefighter (ELSFF), and has the ability to obtain many peripheral certifications.
